Exploring the Timeless Appeal: Classic ’80s Look Versus Contemporary Military Style
The GI Joe Classified Rock ‘N Roll figure is a great 6″ figure to enhance its military and heavy weapons specialist look. Whether you want to improve the parts, add realistic combat gear, or completely modify the figure. On this personalized action figure, there are no paint aplications, however I will cover how you can add weathering or paint applications in this blog.
So, here are some customisation ideas for you to try:
1. Enhancing Paint & Weathering
- Camouflage Uniform: If you want a more realistic military look, repaint his pants and shirt with a tactical camo pattern. Use dry brushing for texture.
- Tattoo Detailing: Rock ‘N Roll has arm tattoos; consider embellishing them with a fine brush, adding more tattoos, or some colour for a distinct style.
- Weathering Gear & Weapons:
- Use silver dry brushing on weapons and armour to add a worn-metal look to the new combat gear.
- Try adding a light black wash to his boots.
- You can also add battle damage; scratches and damage effects with a dry sponge. (there are plenty of videos on YouTube for this technique).
2. Custom Accessories & Gear
- Realistic Ammo Belts & Armour:
- Consider adding new body armour as I have in this customised action figure, or holsters for a tactical feel. I will be adding leg holsters somewhere along the line.
- Helmet & Headgear Mods:
- Although there are no goggles or night vision modifications on this custom, I will be doing some to this GI Joe Classified figure shortly, and maybe a custom paint job on his helmet.
- Backpack Upgrade:
- If you looking to create a more classic look Rock ‘N Roll figure, you could think about attaching a double ammo pack to his back, or some extra shotgun shells or grenades for realism.
3. Weapon Upgrades & Customization
- Machine Gun Enhancements:
- I haven’t decided on the best machine gun to use on this personalized action figure. But when I do I will repaint the gun, adding battle damage; scratches and damage effects for realism.
- Swappable Weapons:
- If you want to you could even try to equip him with a custom 3D-printed gun.
4. Poseability & Articulation Fixes
- As you can see from this customisation, I have swapped Rock N Roll’s original legs with Dukes. I did this by using the boil-and-pop technique. So, as I have mentioned in previous blogs, if the joints feel too loose after doing this, apply clear nail polish or floor polish to tighten them.
5. Classic ’80s Look vs. Modern Military Style
- Finally, if you prefer the classic look; you can repaint the custom action figure in bright green, tan, and classic Joe colours.
- To go for the modern style; use more realistic military tones like grey, black, or camouflage patterns.
